Dental health is built on a foundation of at-home oral hygiene and regular dental cleanings and examinations. Not far behind as a factor in oral health are the foods and beverages with which teeth and gums are in constant contact.

Today we’re looking at the role our diets play in dental health, which foods and beverages promote good oral health, and which ones ought to be limited, if not avoided altogether.

What Type of Diet Promotes Healthy Teeth, Gums, and Oral Health?

A diet that promotes strong oral health is one loaded with nutrients like vitamins C and D, and calcium, each of which plays a role in ensuring strong oral (and overall)  health. Immune system-boosting vitamin C helps to prevent gum disease, while Vitamin D aids in the absorption of calcium, which is vital to maintaining tooth enamel and jawbone (and all bones in general) integrity.

In practical terms, this suggests a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, especially leafy greens, dairy, lean proteins, whole grains, seeds, and nuts, especially almonds. These foods, in addition to delivering all-important nutrients, also deliver dietary fiber, which reduces plaque buildup by promoting chewing and stimulating saliva production.

Foods to Avoid for the Sake of Your Dental Health

As far as dental health is concerned, what you don’t eat can be as important as what you do.

Topping the list of foods and beverages to avoid (or at least limit) are those high in sugar. That’s because sugar, especially processed sugar found in treats like candies, cookies, and sodas, clings to teeth and promotes the growth of harmful plaque-causing bacteria. Also important to monitor is the intake of tooth enamel-eroding acids, like those found in citrus fruits and juices, coffee, and carbonated soft drinks.

If these foods and drinks are a part of your diet, we’d encourage consuming them in moderation and brushing your teeth as soon as possible after consumption.
